When parents support their kids’ education at home, it has a far-reaching impact on the academic performance of the child in school. The role of parents at home is vital for the development and strengthening of basic learning skills of the child. The world of learning is complex and kids need a conceptual understanding of topics and creative imagination to be able to excel in their education.
Since teaching and learning are inseparable, when parents support their kids’ education at home, it encourages self-confidence in the child. Kids who are self-confident are more likely to excel in school and exams than kids who lack self-esteem.
How Parents support their kids’
One way parents support their kids’ education is to show more interest in helping them learn; this is my candid advice. This support comes in different ways.
Let’s begin with ways parents support their kids’ education at home.
1. Encouraging Self-Belief
When parents support their kids’ education at home, they should understand that kids learn at a different pace. Parents should always promote a positive attitude in their kid’s. When parents make comments that show the kid that you are frustrated with their effort only puts more pressure on the child.
Parents should understand that mistakes are part of the learning process and should be tolerated. Encourage your child to work hard and put in the effort so as to be successful.
Learning is a lifelong activity and kids should be encouraged to proceed on this journey with patience and hard work.
2. Parents Support their kids’ by Learning from them
When children try to teach their parents, it means they are learning. Parents support their kids at home when they encourage their kids’ to teach them what they have learned. When your kids know you always ask them to teach you what they have learned after each class session, they tend to pay more attention to what is taught in class.
When parents ask their kids’ questions sometimes a problem that the child had not thought through arises. This point to an opportunity to find different ways of thinking to arrive at the solution.
Asking your child to teach you also gives you the opportunity to understand what they are learning in school.
3. Being Patient
When kids’ are struggling to catch up with school work, all they need from their parents at home is patience and understanding. A lot of factors can make a child struggle in school, as a parent, it is your responsibility to be patient with your child and seek help early for a struggling child. Impatience from parents in any form especially comparing them to other kids who are doing well in school puts psychological pressure on them.
Let your child know that you believe in their ability to come out of it if they work hard.
4. Challenge your high-achieving kids’
Some kids enjoy learning and are constantly seeking ways to be challenged. Providing the opportunity for them to be challenged is one way parents support their kids’ education.
5. Purchase excellent pieces of children learning materials
I encourage parents to support their kids’ education at home by purchasing excellent pieces of children learning materials. These include children’s literature, educational videos, pieces of lego etc. Learning can take place at home in different ways and these excellent pieces of children learning materials will help kids learn at home.
These are some ways parents support their kids’ education at home. Learning is a lifelong activity and kids should be encouraged to proceed on this journey with patience and hard work.
